Two Sides of Me - "Myself ; Myself" (EP) Review

“The overall instrumental composition is very well written and flows effortlessly. The harsh vocals are very consistent and have a very crisp “burn” sound that I personally look for. As for the clean vocals go, melodies are catchy and overall tone is easy on the ear. I highly recommend checking these fellas out.”
- Michael Morgan of Havens

The 5-piece hybrid hardcore band Two Sides of Me, formed in September 2017, originating from Central Virginia, have released their debut record Myself ; Myself. Specializing in switching from upbeat pop-punk to metalcore, these guys are truly onto something special with their sound. Unlike most other bands these guys don’t stick to one sound throughout their works, as they’ve managed to hit multiple genres in one 5 song EP flawlessly.

To open the record, "Eyes Wide Open" begins with a riff that could be considered to some as “Pop-Punk”. This track is as upbeat and cheery as you could hope to hear in the early weeks of summer. Truly a song that almost delivers an element of nostalgia. While maintaining its moments of technicality and “freshness”, needless to say, the mood has been set for the record.

Track #2, "The Unknown", opens dissonantly and eerily with a classic early metalcore-esque riff backed by a building drum pattern that runs boldly into the song's first chorus structure. This track can more or less be the middle point or “peak” point of turmoil in the progression of the overall theme Two Sides of Me is trying to convey in the record.

Some could say track 3, "Graves", is the more technical and harder hitting track on the record. Reminiscent of acts like The Amity Affliction or other metalcore acts, we are hit in the chest with this emotional piece. Utilizing heavier and more unclean vocals and deeper lyrics, the listener feels turmoil and melancholy mixed with a plethora of other emotions.

Running back to the more upbeat pop-punk aspects of the group, track 4, "Everything You’ve Held So Close", brings with it elements of melodic chords structure and nostalgic vocal patterns. While still maintaining signature the turmoil we’ve heard thus far on the record, this track holds a hardcore undertone at parts to once again shift the mood from one genre to another.

To bring this record to a close, Track 5, "Nothing and No One", hits you in the chest right out of the gates. We get the sensation of “finale” as the tone of the record begins it epic climax. Melodic choruses, thunderous drum work and catharsis riddle this track effortlessly. As the track closes after the final verse it descends from one last hard chord and rings out as electronic hisses and effects ride the ambiance to the record's final breath.
