The Metal Experience

"What at first seemed like a hard hitting prog track, actually ended up to be a really inspirational blend of different genres, topped with a pinch of modern spices."

  • Dario Mihic (onemind)

FFO: Weeping Wound, Dropout Kings, & Darke Complex.

The one-man band, BVD Mentality out of Jacksonville, Florida, founded by Colton Ramey in 2021, is back for blood this time around with his bouncy new single, “Bad Intentions.” Throw out any preconceived notions you may have about this project, especially if you’ve seen them live. Being no stranger to metalcore, and having been affiliated with numerous other metal based projects, Colton’s taken to his roots with “Bad Intentions."

“This song is about vices and reverting back to them, plain and simple.”

Let’s take a field trip to the 2010’s. Chances are that if you’re reading this, you had banged your head at Warped Tour or SoWhat? Music Festival to acts like Issues, Crown The Empire, Dropout Kings, or Code Orange. Now, take all of those bands and compile their discographies into three minutes and forty-nine seconds. You would then have “Bad Intentions” by BVD Mentality.

Before we really get down to the nitty gritty with this track, let’s take a look at BVD Mentality and their first two singles, “Too Late” and “My Novacaine.”

“Too Late" is a song that definitely has a Hard Rock influence. Think MGK meets Dak Holiday. The drums are heavy going from verse to verse, and the guitars have plenty of palm-muting to go around.

Moving on, “My Novacaine" is a track where the wings start to sprout for BVD Mentality. The boundaries are pushed on this track, and the rules are arguably rewritten.

“Bad Mentality” takes the best of “Hyperpop” vocals, catchy flows, and the best of Colton’s signature lyrical depravity. There’s light at the end of the tunnel though, right? Yeah, no. Not with “Bad Intentions.” In fact, this is easily the heaviest and darkest song we’ve heard from BVD Mentality in any capacity. This song is about vices and reverting back to them, plain and simple. It’s a treat getting to know the deeper sides of artists and what makes them tick. With this new installment, we truly get it all! You would think that by now the BVD Mentality playbook would be stuck to, and you wouldn’t be entirely wrong in thinking that, but you’re surely not entirely correct!

Here’s the thing, If we’ve learned anything from BVD Mentality, it’s that we really don’t know what he's going to do next. This is precisely why the new single “Bad Intentions” hits different.
