Yo what the fuck is up??

Oh, is it “nothing?” Wow, that’s wild.

Good thing I got another choice swing to offer ya from another criminally under recognized Chicago group; Through N Through.

Warning; indulging in this record may increase episodes of Show Withdrawal Disorder. Symptoms may include spin kicking your cat, masturbating to those full page minor label advertisements in Decibel magazine, and reviewing albums into an echochamber.

So let’s get into it! Entombed? Bloodlet? Sheer Terror? Here to stay. None of that overproduced, overblown BARK BARK shit here. Nope, no need. Through N Through actually have something to say.

Our Side sounds crisp as fuck, allowing the listener to fully appreciate Through N Through’s musicality and compositional strengths. No songs drag or feel repetitive, as the guitar and drums fight against both hardcore tropes and playing a part the same way twice. At the same time, the band remains very deep in the pocket, and their excellent use of space to highlight various instruments and create heaviness suggests that no riff on the album was left to chance. The vocals across the album are incredibly consistent, while also brutal, and settle perfectly into the clean mix. Again, not too many studio tricks required here; Through N Through shot for a transparent mix, and I see why. This shit was clearly written at the practice space, perfected at shows, and fully conceptualized far before ever arriving at the studio.

With that said, this is not a hyper-accurate, reductionist “TRU HARDCORE” attempt; although Through N Through is primarily a hardcore band, they integrate thrash (“The Path”), doom (“Catharsis,” “Old News,” “Unstoppable”), and even some post-hardcore-verging-on-new-wave, (“Scarface”) attitude into their swagger. Further proof that Through N Through seem to really know what they’re doing is a lack of repetitiveness; every part is interesting, and no beatdown overstays its welcome. Although the breakdown is very much at the core of their work, Through N Through understands that a breakdown is propelled by context, tonality, and momentum just as much as energy.

Unfortunately, lyrics are not available for this album. However, we need to Abolish I.C.E. Additionally, Police Brutality is real and creates cyclical trauma and mental health issues in Little Village and beyond. Furthermore, Scarface is an incredible movie. Any issues here and this MAY not be the band for you.

Our Side is available on all streaming platforms; come on over. Oh, and see below for two different Through in Through performances documented by hate5six.
