Founded during the winter in Dánszentmiklós, Hungary, Needless has been slowly evolving and finally found their sound within the aggressive beauty of extreme metal. The middle of last year was when Needless finally released their debut album, Heresy, which takes the listener on a journey through many religious beliefs and philosophies, pulling the curtain back to reveal humanity's true nature.
This quick bite barely scratches the surface of this epic, and should only be used as a starting place for Heresy.
"Starcult" sits as the third song off the album and immediately starts by punching you in the face with fast guitar and drums. Demonic vocals are layered in, emotionally raw that sound as though the vocal cords are being ripped from the throat. The harmonious chaos will keep your head banging long after your neck has snapped, making you want to crowd kill anything within the vicinity, all the while keeping beautiful rhythm.
"On A Journey Sublunaris" fades in with a blistering guitar riff and smashing drums, falling back to let the maniacal screams take center stage, an ear splintering fry that is absolutely brilliant. Shining through on this track is the vocal performance, with smooth transitions from lows to highs demonstrating the control and dedication to creating this masterpiece. The blasting drums and lightning fast guitar polishes the song to perfection, a song that will be etched in the extreme metal history books.
The album concludes with "Sky Burial", hailing the end with a gorgeous, soft intro that builds and transitions seamlessly into heavy guitar and drums. The lead guitar riff over top is incredibly catchy, with the theme continuing throughout the song. The brutal, guttural vocals are stacked on top, the underlying instruments adding to the brutality. "Sky Burial" ebbs and flows, moving to and from gorgeous slow instrumental, implementing various sounds and showcasing the musicianship and care each member takes into their craft. The changing of the tempo throughout makes "Sly Burial" seem as though it is its own journey, leaving you wanting more.
This album is a must if you are a fan of Lamb of God, Entombed or Mastodon.
