Forming in 2015 as the fusion of three local acts in Dixon Illinois, Extinguish The Sun brings their own flavor to metal, making them a culinary masterpiece and filling the appetite of anyone who listens.
Extinguish The Sun kicks off the EP with “Like Sex”, the distorted guitar building up the anticipation. The drums are layered in next with the second guitar bringing in a higher riff, welcoming the vocalist to join. Keeping with the slow intro, the soothing vocals waft on top of the instruments. As if to turn on a dime, the ending of the song explodes into a much more aggressive style, the gruff screaming accompanied by fast instruments, quickening the pace for the EP.
“Cake Sniffer” follows next, keeping the upbeat guitar and drums while the melodic clean vocals create the perfect harmony. The guitar is left to roam free throughout this song, an absolutely killer main riff with a blinding guitar solo to perfectly round out the song, scratching the itch of any guitar player listening. Not to be outshined, the drums and vocals keep pace with the guitar, throwing in beautiful fillers and great progressive build ups. There is no denying the chemistry between the members of the band.
Sitting halfway on this EP is “Identity Crisis”, opening with another amazing guitar riff that is perfectly accented with the drum beat underneath. Delivered with almost a speaking voice, the lyrics hit hard and through the perfect medium. Screams are mixed throughout the song, emphasizing the points that need to be emphasized, with the cleaner vocals slowing the pace and driving the message home.
Coming in as number four, “Clocks” sounds like it was created at the height of punk rock, with chord heavy guitar playing over a simple but perfect drumbeat, vocals the icing on the cake. The pacing of the song is slowed down and picked up expertly, slowing down for a chorus before the rough vocals make an appearance to kick the song back into high gear. Extinguish The Sun brought a twist and their own idea to a classic sound, blending the elements perfectly.
“In Oceans Deep” sits as the fifth song and shows exactly why it was chosen as the title song and single for the EP. Taking a piece from each song on the EP, “In Oceans Deep” displays the sound and character of the band. The chemistry between the members, the musical talent and the unique sound of the band are all on full blast throughout the song.
Rounding out the EP is “Witch Hazel”, hailing the beginning of the end with a gorgeous, slow intro. Clean vocals highlighted by the clean guitar underneath, progressively building slowly over the song, exploding at the choruses with distorted guitar and deep drums underneath the powerful vocal delivery. A great end to an amazing album, you will be wishing there is just one more song with each listen of the EP.
If you love the sound of the old metal gods with a new twist, Oceans is a must buy for your collection and Extinguish The Sun needs to be on your radar.
