Dire Atrophy – "Escape" (EP) Review

Compiled successfully in 2018 and currently running in Tampa, Florida, Dire Atrophy rendered into existence with an EP that perfectly blends video games and metal, bringing soft ballads and skull crushing music to form their debut album Escape.

The first track of the EP is titled "War God" (ft. John Galloway), fading in with a guitar riff that is reminiscent of old video game music. The song is perfect to start the album, immediately showcasing the immense talent that the band has and their dedication to their music. Blending several genres of metal together, the progression of the song feels as though you are fighting your way through a video game, building up through the song until the end, falling into some atmosphere as it bleeds into the next song, "Operation I Snakedown". This song builds slowly, the beginning a beautiful ballad with powerful clean vocals, something rare in a band’s debut release. The ballad quickly transitions back into the fast paced, in your face metal that is perfect for an evening of violence in video games. The chorus brings back elements of the soft beginning and sprinkles it into the quickening chaos.

"Installing Software Update v6.10.18" is an intermission piece, a quick ballad to give a small respite to the listener before your skull is crushed again. The song is mesmerizing, the eerie background is the perfect background for the soft vocals, leaving you in a trance before track four "Salt Warrior "smashes you in the face with its abrupt beginning. You will hang on to every second of "Salt Warrior", the verse riff making you want to pick up the guitar and the chorus will be engraved into your head, making you itch to hit the replay button just one more time.

The final song to the album is "Operation II Rediscovery", with the acoustic intro sets the stage for an epic melody. The song is the perfect ending to this album, letting the listener fall back and recollect on all their memories, as well as subconsciously starting the album over and over again.

If you are a fan of all things video games, powerful clean vocals and throat tearing growls, blistering guitar riffs and amazing drums, this album is a must for your collection.
